XRP is the currency used on a digital payment platform called RippleNet. RippleNet is run by a company called Ripple, but the XRP Ledger is open-source and not based on blockchain technology. Instead, it uses a distributed ledger database.
The RippleNet payment network is a real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system that seeks to make worldwide financial transactions possible in real time. While XRP is the cryptocurrency native to the XRP Ledger, you may send and receive payments in any currency.
While Ryan Fugger originally proposed the Ripple payment system in 2004, it wasn’t until 2012 that Jed McCaleb and Chris Larson took over the project (at the time, it was also known as OpenCoin).
How Does XRP Work?
XRP was created by Ripple to be a fast, less expensive and more scalable alternative to other digital assets and payment platforms like SWIFT.
RippleNet’s ledger is maintained by the global XRP Community. This means that anyone can be a part of the community and help keep track of transactions. The XRP Ledger processes transactions every 3-5 seconds, or whenever independent validator nodes come to a consensus on both the order and validity of XRP transactions. Unlike Bitcoin, the XRP Ledger does not use proof-of-work mining.
